Teeth cleaning
My little Pekingese is 15 years old and is now suffering from gingivitis; it was recommended that we spend almost $600 to get the teeth cleaned but is she too old for anesthesia? I think she is fine otherwise.

Replied on 04/19/2011I'm sorry to hear that your dog is experiencing gingivitis. That can be painful, lead to tooth loss and systemic infections. Although she is fifteen years old if she is in good health age shouldn't be a reason not to anesthetize her. I would have a complete blood count and biochemistry profile checked on her to look for any underlying disease conditions which could complicate anesthesia. If everything looks normal on those tests and she doesn't have any evidence of heart disease she should definitely have her teeth cleaned. By doing so you will be preventing bacteria from her mouth invading other organs in her body and thereby preventing future problems. Your veterinarian will take into account her age when choosing an anesthetic protocol and monitor her closely for any complications. The anesthetics that are available today are much safer than the ones that we had available even a few years ago. I think you will appreciate the positive difference in her a dental will make after it is performed and not be sorry at all.

One cm smooth pale nodule in a mouth of my dog
I just found last night a 1 cm smooth pale nodule in my 1 year old German Shepherd's lower back outer jaw. I thought it was likely a cyst (thats what it looks like). It is not neer the gingival line, it is below it.IT is getting removed on Monday by my local vet. I'm sure its not been there more than 1-2 months since i examine him regularly (i'm a physician). What presentation is this most likely consistent with? nonpigmented melanoma? fibrosarcoma? my husband is devistated. Thanks

My Australian Shepherd dog has dental problems
I have a 6 year old Australian Shepherd, and recently noticed that all her upper back molars were cut down and missing their points. I do not allow any chew material other than dental strips and dried ostrich meat strips, and definitely no play with stones or sticks. What has caused the immense wear on her teeth? I also clean her teeth once a week -admittedly not wonderfully because she fights, but I do try. I am really desperate because I want stop this heavy wear. Can you help?

Reoccurring benign dog tumor
I have a 5 year old boston terrier, last year he had a benign tumor removed from his upper gum line. Over the year it grew back to the size of my thumb nail. At that time his lower canine began puncturing it. He did not seem to be in any pain nor have any change in appetite. I had the tumor removed again. That was about 3 weeks ago. I have noticed it is growing back again. It is pinker and more red then the rest of his gums. I don' know if i should keep removing it or what it is. Please advise.

Are dog gums supposed to be pink?
Are my newly adopted dog's dark, in some places black, gums an indication of a problem? The gums are sticky to the touch. He isn't dehydrated and was given a clean bill of health by a vet prior to adoption two weeks ago. He doesn't behave as if he's sick or feeling bad, but is a very anxious 4 year old shepherd mix. Aren't his gums supposed to be pink?

My dog is too old for dental cleaning?
When my dog turned 17 the vet refused to clean her teeth. He said she would not survive the anesthetic. Now her teeth are really bad and she cannot chew dog food. The vet said it is time to put her to sleep but the dog is active and otherwise healthy. I can't see putting a dog to sleep because her teeth are bad. The vet never suggested brushing her teeth and now they are too bad and painful. I am at my wits end. She is a wonderful animal who was blind at birth and has lived well.

Home remedy for missing adult dog canine?
My adult dog lost her adult canine tooth. She is 10 years old and up to date on shots. She now has a hole in the top of her gums. I can not afford to suture the hole or get her teeth cleaned. I recently was laid off. I know this is close to her sinuses. Is there any over the counter/at home things I can do? Maybe an antibacterial mouthwash I can rinse in her mouth with a syringe? Help. I feel like a horrible dog mom. But I just can't afford to get it sutured.

Broken canine tooth
One of my cats was drooling excessively, so I took a look in her mouth to see if there was anything out of the ordinary in there. There was, somehow she managed to break off about 2 or 3 mm of her left canine tooth. She isn't off her food, but is obviously uncomfortable. Is there anything I can do for her to ease the pain, and is there anything the vet can do for her? Thanks Jenn

Dog tooth is missing and has swollen tissue
My little Yorkie cross dog, has one of his front teeth that somehow went missing. Just behind the missing tooth he has swollen tissue. He and a little Jack Russell got into a fight over a bone. His mouth was sore after we split them up, then I noticed my dog, Terry, was using his tongue like something was stuck between his front teeth. I looked and did not see anything. The next day is when I noticed one front tooth missing and swelling.
