Drontal for Cats

If your cat has tapeworms, one of the most effective ways of eliminating this parasite is Drontal for cats. Because tapeworms are relatively common in many parts of the country, and can actually cause major health concerns for many pets, it's important that you take any measures necessary to eliminate a tapeworm infestation when it starts in your cat. Read on for a brief overview of Drontal and it's various uses, side effects and benefits.

Drontal Overview

This medicine has been developed for use in both humans and animals alike. The animal versions of the drug are called Droncit and Drontal, although there are also generic versions that are available as well and which are typically less expensive. Both are formulations of the medicine called praziquantel. In order to be able to provide Drontal to your pet, you'll need to be prepared to take him to the vet's office in order to have his tapeworm infestation confirmed through tests. Once your vet has confirmed that your pet has tapeworms, you can ask about the possibility of treating his condition with Drontal.

This medicine works by reducing the ability of the tapeworm to be able to attach to the inner walls of your pet's intestine. It can therefore be eliminated through bowel movements more easily.

Using Drontal for Your Cat

Most vets will recommend providing your cat with Drontal in the injectable form, although there is also a tablet which you can provide to your pet orally along with his food or with a treat. Many vets will prefer to provide the injection at the vet's office. However, you may be able to provide the injection at home as well. Finally, if your pet is suffering from additional parasites or it's unclear exactly which type of parasite is affecting your cat, praziquantel is also available in combination with drugs that are designed to eliminate roundworms, hookworms and other types of parasites.

The exact dosage of the medicine that you give to your pet will be dependent upon his weight primarily, although the severity of his condition will also have an impact.

Side Effects of Drontal Use in Cats

If your pet is very young (under 2 months), it's generally not advisable to give him Drontal. Otherwise, this medicine is generally considered very safe for use in cats. While it's possible that your pet might have an allergic reaction to the medicine, this situation is very rare.

The side effects of praziquantel typically include the following:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sedation or tiredness

If you use the injectable type of the drug, it's not uncommon for there to be a mild inflammation or some minor pain at the point at which you've made the injection. Still, in all cases, side effects from Drontal are rare.
